The idea is that you buy the frame and the glue and then you collect enough wine corks to fill the middle. Amazingly enough there are loads of people who have a wish in life to complete a project like this. I hope that their friends are helping them to collect the corks though as can you imagine how much damage drinking the amount of wine contained in 200 or 300 bottles would do to your liver? If you are going to collect your own, it is a good excuse to have a couple of parties. Some people get really into their project and fill up boards based on a particular region or brand of wine.
You have an alternative though as some companies sell a wine cork bulletin board kit made from recycled materials. If you want to make a wine cork board, you will need a hot glue gun, a frame and at least 80 corks although it will depend on the size you are looking to make. You can lay the corks in any pattern you want but the usual designs are a uniform pattern such as three down and then three across rather like a patchwork quilt.
Alternatively if you want to hide the end that was once sitting in the wine, particularly if it was red wine, you would stand them tall with the wine end backing onto the frame. Once you have filled the frame, you simply glue each individual one in place. You shouldn’t have to cut the corks although a couple around the edges may require a little trim. A sharp kitchen or Stanley knife will do the trick.
It should only take a wine cork board a couple of hours to dry and they are ready for use. These can make rather unique gifts although you may need to convince the recipient that you do not need the 12 step AA program!
