You have finalized the layout for your model railway and put into place the various model buildings you want to have as part of your chosen theme. The next question is what is the best paint to use on them? You want to make them look as realistic as possible, allowing for textures such as age and condition of buildings the models are intending to represent.

If the building is to look old and run down then it has to be painted to look that way to add the touch of realism which is so important.

When painting your models you do not have to restrict yourself to the use of brushes only. Play around with airbrushes, rags, your partners cosmetics, and sponges. For paints, experiment with gloss, enamel and acrylic water based hobby paints. There are spray paints available to try as well.

It depends what kind of surface you are painting on to as well. This might be wood or plastic. Some paints work better than others on the various types of surface. Experiment using different paints to find what works best for you.

Eye shadow, and shoe polish can be used to add an authentic look. And use real materials to help create your landscape. Rocks and soils are just two examples of things you can use and both are easily available.

All it takes is a little imagination and inventiveness to create the look you want to achieve. And if things don’t work out, which sometimes happens, you can always start again and learn from your experiences.
